Dinner gone in ten seconds? Raised ridges spread the kibble out, so your dog searches for each bite and the meal lasts longer.

Description

You put the bowl down. You turn to rinse the scoop. You turn back, and the bowl is empty and being pushed across the kitchen floor. Some dogs treat every meal like a race, and the meal is over before it has really started.

A slow feeder dog bowl changes the pace. Raised ridges spread the kibble out, so your dog has to nose and lick each piece out of the pattern. Dinner turns into a short search game instead of a ten-second gulp, and you get a few calm minutes while it happens.

Purpose: a slow feeder dog bowl for dogs who race their dinner

A flat bowl lets a fast eater take huge mouthfuls. The food is gone in seconds, and the rest of the evening is spent staring at you in case there is more.

The ridges in this bowl break the food into small pockets. Your dog works around the pattern, picking pieces out a few at a time. The meal lasts longer, and the eating looks less like a vacuum cleaner and more like a game.

Mealtime as a small job

Dogs enjoy using their nose and tongue to find food. A slow feeder gives them that at every meal, without any extra time from you. For many dogs it is the easiest enrichment of the day, because it happens twice daily anyway.

Materials & make: how the slow feeder works

The bowl is made of PP plastic. Inside, curved raised ridges run from the centre outwards, like a maze with no dead ends. When you pour kibble in, it settles into the gaps between the ridges.

Your dog cannot take one big bite. They nose and lick their way around the bowl instead. Two ear-shaped handles on the rim make the bowl easy to lift, carry to the sink and set back down.

Three colours

Green, pink or orange. Each one has the same ridge pattern and the same ear-shaped handles. Bright colours make it easy to see at a glance whether the bowl has been cleaned out.

Fit: which dogs and cats the slow feeder suits

Sizing: About 23 cm (9.1 in) across and 5 cm (2 in) deep, based on the packaging size. It suits small and medium dogs and cats. Start with a smaller portion while your pet learns the shape.

Good matches

  • Small and medium dogs who finish dry food in seconds
  • Cats who eat kibble too quickly
  • Pets who get bored between meals and enjoy a food game

Where to use something else

Very large dogs may find the bowl too small for a full meal. Dogs with short, flat faces may need a shallower pattern; watch the first few meals and make sure your dog can reach the food comfortably. If your vet has given you advice about eating speed for medical reasons, follow it first.

How to start

  1. Pour in half the usual portion of dry food for the first meal.
  2. Stay nearby and watch how your pet works the bowl.
  3. Once they get the idea, move to the full portion.
  4. Place the bowl on a non-slip surface if your dog pushes it around.

The day it is for

Six o’clock, and your dog is already sitting by the cupboard. You fill the slow feeder and set it down. The usual ten-second blur is gone. Instead there is a soft clatter as your dog noses the kibble out of the ridges, one corner at a time. You get to finish your own cup of tea before the bowl is clean.

Care

  • Wash in warm soapy water after each meal and dry fully.
  • Use a small brush to reach the gaps between the ridges.
  • Check the bowl for chew marks now and then.
  • Replace it if it cracks, because cracks are hard to keep clean.

Questions about the slow feeder dog bowl

Do slow feeder bowls actually slow dogs down?

Yes, for most dogs who eat dry food. The raised ridges split the kibble into small pockets, so your dog has to pick it out bit by bit instead of taking big mouthfuls. Start with a smaller portion while your dog learns the pattern.

Can cats use a slow feeder bowl?

Yes. The bowl suits cats who eat dry food too quickly. Cats work the ridges with their tongue and paws, so the meal lasts longer. Watch the first meals to make sure your cat can reach the food easily.

Can I use wet food in it?

You can, but dry food works best. Wet food sticks in the gaps between the ridges and takes more cleaning. If you use it, wash the bowl straight after the meal with a small brush.

How do I clean a slow feeder?

Wash it in warm soapy water after each meal and dry it fully. A small brush or an old toothbrush reaches the corners between the ridges. Replace the bowl if it cracks.

Is it suitable for large dogs?

It suits small and medium dogs best. At about 23 cm across, it may be too small for a large dog’s full meal. Large dogs can still use it for part of a meal or for treats.
