Description

Rain does not cancel the walk. Your dog still needs to go out, and you still need to bring them home without a soaked back and a puddle in the hallway. The usual answer is a towel at the door and a wet dog bed for the rest of the evening.

This dog raincoat keeps most of the rain off before it reaches the coat. It covers the back and chest, closes under the belly with hook-and-loop straps, and carries a reflective strip that shows up in headlights. Ten seconds to put on, a much drier dog at the end of the walk.

Purpose: a dog raincoat for walks you cannot skip

A wet coat is more than a towel problem. Small dogs get cold quickly once the fur is soaked, and the damp follows them onto the sofa and into the car. The raincoat keeps the back and chest dry, which is where most of the rain lands.

It is light, so dogs who dislike heavy coats usually accept it. It goes on over the head and closes underneath, with no legs to thread through.

Rainy days are dark days. The reflective strip catches car headlights and torch light, and the bright yellow version stands out on a wet pavement.

Materials & make: how the raincoat keeps rain off

The coat is polyester with a waterproof outer layer. Reflective trim runs along the sides. Hook-and-loop straps close under the belly, so you can adjust the fit in a second.

1. Slip the coat over your dog’s head.
2. Lay it flat along the back.
3. Bring the straps under the belly and press them closed.
4. Check that two fingers fit under the straps.

Two colours

Yellow comes in XXS, XS and S. Red comes in size S only. Yellow is the more visible choice for dark, rainy mornings.

How to measure: Measure around the base of the neck, around the widest part of the chest, and along the back from collar to tail. Red comes in size S only.

Choosing between two sizes

Choose by chest first, because the straps close around the chest. If your dog’s chest sits in the overlap between two sizes, compare the back length and pick the size closer to it. The coat should end near the base of the tail.

Getting a dog used to a raincoat

Some dogs freeze the first time they wear a coat. Put it on indoors for a minute, give a treat and take it off again. Repeat a few times over a day or two before the first rainy walk. Keep the first outing short and cheerful. Most dogs forget the coat once the walk is interesting enough.

Raincoat or padded coat

A raincoat is light and keeps rain off in mild, wet weather. A padded coat adds warmth for cold days. Many owners use the raincoat from autumn to spring and switch to a padded coat only when temperatures drop near freezing.

The day it is for

The forecast said showers and the forecast was right. You slip the yellow raincoat over your dog’s head, press the straps closed and head out. Forty minutes later the coat drips on the doormat, the dog underneath is only damp around the legs, and one quick towel finishes the job.

Is the dog raincoat fully waterproof?

The outer layer is waterproof and keeps rain off the back and chest. The legs and belly are open, so they can still get wet in heavy rain or deep puddles.

How do I measure my dog for a raincoat?

Measure around the widest part of the chest and around the base of the neck. Then measure along the back from collar to the base of the tail. Choose by chest first.

Which colours come in which sizes?

Is it suitable for large dogs?

No. The largest size, S, fits a chest of 40–54 cm (15.7–21.3 in) and a back of 40 cm (15.7 in). It suits small dogs and some smaller medium breeds.

Can my dog wear it over a harness?

It is cut to sit close to the body, so a slim harness may fit underneath. Check that the straps still close comfortably and that the lead clip is easy to reach.
