No snap, no guessing. A cordless dog nail grinder that files nails down a little at a time, with three port sizes, five speeds and an LED light at the tip.
Description
Clippers make some dogs nervous. You squeeze, there’s a loud snap, and the paw is gone before you’ve finished one nail. A dog nail grinder works differently. It files the nail down a little at a time, so there’s no snap, and it’s easier to stop well before the quick.
This rechargeable grinder has three port sizes for small, medium and large nails, five speeds, and a small LED light at the tip so you can see the nail while you work. A cap covers the grinding head when it’s off.
Purpose: a dog nail grinder for small, careful trims
Inside every nail runs the quick, a core of blood vessels and nerves. Cut into it and the nail bleeds. A grinder takes off a thin layer at a time, so you can stop, look at the end of the nail and decide whether to go on. That’s why many owners of dogs with black nails prefer one: you check the cut surface after each pass instead of guessing where one big cut will land.
Grinding also leaves a rounded edge rather than a sharp corner, which is kinder to your legs, your sofa and your floors.

What the LED light does, and what it doesn’t
The light helps you see the nail in a dim hallway or on a dark-furred paw. On light-colored nails it can make the pink quick easier to spot. On black nails, no light will show you the quick. Go slowly and watch the end of the nail: a chalky ring means you’re getting close, and a small dark dot in the center means stop.
Materials & make: how it works
The body is plastic with a diamond grinding bit inside the head. You choose one of three openings in the cap that sits over the bit, depending on the size of your dog’s nails, then pick a speed.
- Charge it with the USB cable. The light at the bottom shows the charging status.
- Choose the port that fits the nail: small, medium or large.
- Start on the lowest speed and switch it on near your dog before you touch a paw, so the sound becomes familiar.
- Hold one toe, put the nail tip into the port and touch it to the bit for a second or two at a time.
- Check the end of the nail after every pass, and stop well before the quick.

Fit: which pets it suits
- Dogs of any size, using the matching port. Larger, thicker nails may need a higher speed and a bit more patience.
- Dogs with black nails, where small passes are safer than one cut.
- Cats who will sit for it, on the small port and the lowest speed.
Where to be careful
Keep long fur away from the spinning head. Hold it back with your fingers, or slip an old stocking over the paw and push the nail through. Don’t hold the grinder against one nail for long, because the bit gets warm. If your dog panics or a nail has grown into the pad, ask your vet or a groomer instead.

The day it is for
Sunday evening, and the clicking on the kitchen tiles has started again. Your dog is sleepy on the sofa after a long walk. You sit beside them with a few treats, switch the grinder on low and do two nails, then two more. No snap, no drama. You stop at one paw, because tomorrow is another evening.
Our guide on how to trim dog nails at home covers finding the quick, getting a nervous dog used to nail trims and what to do if a nail bleeds. Clean, dry paws are easier to see, so a quick rinse with the Paw Cleaner Cup first helps.

Care
- Switch it off and brush nail dust out of the cap and head after each use.
- Don’t rinse it under water. Wipe the outside with a dry or slightly damp cloth.
- Put the cap back on before you store it.
- Recharge before it runs flat, so it doesn’t slow down halfway through a paw.
Questions about the dog nail grinder
Is a grinder better than clippers?
Neither suits every dog. A grinder takes off a little at a time and leaves a smooth edge, which helps with black nails. Some dogs dislike the buzz at first. Clippers are faster. If your dog flinches at the snap of clippers, a grinder is worth trying. If you’d rather clip, see our Dog Nail Clippers with Safety Guard.
Will it hurt my dog?
Not when used gently. Touch the nail to the bit for a second or two, then lift away so it doesn’t get warm. Stay well short of the quick. Keep long fur clear of the head.
How do I get my dog used to the noise?
Switch it on near your dog on the lowest speed and give a treat, without touching a paw. Do this for a few days. Then touch the grinder to one nail for a second, treat, and build up slowly.
Can I use it on my cat?
Yes, on the small port and the lowest speed, if your cat will stay still for it. Some cats cope better with small scissor-style clippers, so go slowly and stop if your cat struggles.
How do I charge it?
Use the USB cable in the box with any USB charger. The light at the bottom shows when it’s charging.
