Description

Putting a coat on a dog should not take longer than putting on your own. Yet many winter coats need the harness on first and the coat over it. Then you hunt for the D-ring under the fabric while your dog spins at the door.

This dog winter coat has the lead ring built in. It closes around the chest with an adjustable strap, and a ring on the back takes the lead clip directly. One layer goes on, the lead clips on, and you are out of the door while the kettle is still warm.

Short-coated and small dogs feel the cold quickly. On a wet winter morning, many of them refuse to go further than the end of the street. A padded coat keeps the back and sides warm, so the walk you planned is the walk you get.

Wet weather adds a second problem: a soaked coat that drips all over the house afterwards. The water-resistant outer layer keeps light rain off the back, so there is less to dry when you get home.

Seen on dark evenings

Winter walks often start or end in the dark. Reflective trim on the coat catches car headlights and torch light, which helps drivers and cyclists notice your dog sooner.

Materials & make: how the coat and lead ring work

The outer fabric is water-resistant, with reflective trim. Inside, a padded lining holds warmth against your dog’s back. An adjustable strap closes the coat around the chest.

A ring sits on the back of the coat. Clip your lead to it and walk. The chest strap holds the coat in place while you do.

For strong pullers

The lead ring suits everyday walks. If your dog pulls hard or needs a front-clip harness for training, keep the harness. Use the coat over it, or ask a trainer which setup fits your dog.

Three colours

Black, army green or red. Red is the easiest to spot in a dark park. Black and army green hide mud between washes.

How to measure: Measure around the widest part of the chest, around the base of the neck, and along the back from collar to tail. Choose by chest first. Measurements can vary by 3–5 cm, so size up if your dog is between sizes.

Checking the fit at home

You should be able to slide two fingers under the chest strap. The coat should cover the back without pressing on the base of the tail. Watch your dog walk and sit; if the coat rides up or rubs behind the front legs, try the next size.

The day it is for

It is seven in the morning. Dark, and drizzling. Your dog stands at the door looking unconvinced. The coat goes on in one movement, the strap clicks shut and the lead clips to the ring on the back. Twenty minutes later you are home, the coat is damp on the outside and your dog is warm and dry underneath.

Hand wash it in cool water with mild soap and air dry it away from radiators. Brush off dried mud first so the wash takes less time.
