Materials & make: how the padded fleece mat is built

The top is flannel fleece, smooth to lie on. The underside is plush. Between them sits soft padding, about 4 cm (1.6 in) thick, which gives the mat its cushioned feel.

The mat is machine washable, so it stays fresh with a cold wash and a low tumble dry or a day on the line.

The larger sizes suit small and medium dogs. Measure your dog lying stretched out and add a few centimetres so paws do not hang off the edge.

Keeping the sofa clean around the mat

Pets drift. A cat who starts on the mat ends up beside it by midnight. Place the mat exactly where your pet already lies, and make it the most comfortable spot on the sofa. A little catnip or a favourite toy on the mat helps for the first week. Brush loose fur off the rest of the sofa every few days so the mat stays the obvious choice.

The day it is for

The first cold evening of the year. You lay the mat on the sofa corner and turn round to grab a blanket. By the time you sit down, your cat is already on it, paws tucked under, eyes half closed. At the end of the week the mat goes in the wash, and the sofa underneath is still clean.
