Stop sweeping the same corner. A two-layer honeycomb mat that traps litter from paws, then pours it back into the box.
Description
Cats are tidy. Their paws are not. Every visit to the litter box ends with grains stuck between the toes, and those grains drop off in the first few steps out. That is why the litter trail always starts in the same place, and why sweeping it every evening never seems to end.
A cat litter mat fixes the problem where it starts. This one has two layers of honeycomb EVA foam: litter falls through the holes on top and stays trapped underneath. Once every few days you lift the mat over the box and pour the clean grains back in. Your floor stays clear, and you stop throwing away litter you paid for.
Purpose: why a cat litter mat beats a broom
Cats dig and cover, then step out. Grains cling to the fur between their toes, then fall within the first metre of floor. You can sweep that patch every day, or you can put something on it that holds the litter instead of scattering it.
A flat rug or a bath mat catches some of it. The grains sit on top, and the next set of paws kicks them further. A trapping mat works differently. Grains drop out of sight, below the surface, where paws cannot reach them.
Reuse the litter instead of sweeping it up
Litter that falls through the mat is usually clean. Tip it back in rather than into the bin. If the mat has been wet or soiled, throw that litter away and rinse the mat before you use it again.

Materials & make: how a honeycomb litter mat works
The mat is two layers of EVA foam bonded together. The top layer has a honeycomb pattern of holes. The bottom layer is solid and waterproof, and its underside is non-slip, so the mat stays put on tiles and wooden floors.
When your cat steps out, each paw presses into the honeycomb. Loose grains shake free, fall through the holes and collect between the layers. EVA foam is soft and flexible, so the mat is comfortable underfoot. It stays light enough to lift with one hand, even when full.

Three colours to suit your floor
Grey, black or brown, all with the same two-layer design. Pick the one that disappears against your floor so the corner by the box looks calm instead of cluttered.

Fit: which cat litter mat size you need
- 40 × 50 cm (15.7 × 19.7 in)
- 45 × 60 cm (17.7 × 23.6 in)
- 55 × 75 cm (21.7 × 29.5 in)
How to measure: Measure the floor space in front of your litter box. Choose a mat that extends at least 30 cm (12 in) beyond the entrance.

Match the size to your setup
- 40 × 50 cm: one box in a bathroom or under a counter, where floor space is tight.
- 45 × 60 cm: most front-entry and covered boxes, with room for a full step out.
- 55 × 75 cm: top-entry boxes, two boxes side by side, or a cat who leaps out instead of stepping.
If you are between two sizes, choose the larger one. Litter that lands past the edge of the mat is litter on the floor again.
Where to put a litter mat
Place it directly against the entrance of the box, so the first step out lands on the honeycomb. With a top-entry box, your cat climbs out and lands beside it. Put the mat where they land, which may be next to the box rather than in front of it.
Litter types
Every common litter tracks out of the box, from clumping clay to plant-based pellets. Fine and medium grains drop through the holes. Large pellets may sit on top of the mat, and a quick tip over the box clears them.
The day it is for
Saturday morning. The hallway has stayed clear all week, and the only sign of the litter box is a neat mat in front of it. You lift it, pour a small pile of clean grains back into the box and set it down again. One minute. Nothing to sweep, and nothing crunching under your socks on the way to the kettle.
On the day of an accident, the waterproof base keeps the mess on top of the mat instead of on your floor. You rinse it in the shower and leave it to dry.

Care
- Every few days, lift the mat over the litter box and tip the trapped litter back in.
- For a quick clean between rinses, shake it out outside or vacuum the top with a brush attachment.
- Once a week, or after an accident, rinse it with water and a little mild soap.
- Dry it flat before you put it back, so no water sits between the layers.

Questions about the cat litter mat
Do litter mats actually work?
Yes, when they trap the litter instead of just catching it. A flat mat holds grains on its surface, where paws kick them further. This two-layer mat lets grains fall through the honeycomb and keeps them between the layers until you tip them back into the box.
How does a honeycomb litter mat work?
Your cat’s paws press into the honeycomb as they step out of the box. Loose grains shake free and fall through the holes into the space above the solid base. Lift the mat over the box and tip it to empty it.
How big should a litter mat be?
Big enough to reach at least 30 cm (12 in) past the entrance of the box. For a single front-entry box, 45 × 60 cm suits most setups. For a top-entry box or a cat who jumps out, choose 55 × 75 cm.
How often should I clean a litter mat?
Tip the trapped litter back into the box every few days, or whenever you see grains sitting on top. Rinse the mat with water and mild soap once a week or after an accident, then let it dry flat.
Will it slide on tiles or wooden floors?
The underside is non-slip, which helps the mat stay in place on smooth floors. Lay it on a clean, dry floor; dust or water underneath makes any mat easier to move.
