How to weigh your cat at home

Step on the bathroom scale and note your weight. Then step on again holding your cat, and subtract the first number. Do it twice and use the average.

Where to put the house

Choose a quiet corner out of the main walkway, away from the litter box and the food bowls. A spot near a radiator, but not touching it, suits most cats in winter.

Helping your cat move in

Cats rarely trust new furniture on the first day. Put the house where your cat already likes to sleep, and place a blanket or a worn T-shirt inside so it smells familiar. A few treats on the cushion help. Leave the rest to your cat; most cats explore a new bed in their own time, often at night when the house is quiet.

The day it is for

The heating clicks off at night and the flat cools down. Your cat is already curled inside the house, out of the draught, chin on the edge of the cushion. In the morning they are still there, warm and unbothered. The pile of clean laundry stays clean.
